Using Export Actions in Adobe Lightroom

Lightroom isn’t just limited to what you do in Lightroom. Once you are finished with your images in Lightroom, Lightroom can hand off your images to another program and direct that application to perform any number tasks. Use photoshop actions, import images into other programs, or even use automator scripts. The sky is the limit… or perhaps the programs you own are the limit. Suffice it to say, this is one of my favorite little features in Lightroom. **Join Jared for a FREE Workflow Q&A tomorrow, Wednesday, January 26th at 10 AM Pacific Time on the Pictage Forums.** Using Export Actions in Adobe Lightroom from Jared Platt on Vimeo. The New Math of Lightroom 3 (Process Versions)

Lightroom 3 has a few great new features in it, but the best feature is the math behind the curtain. This is what Adobe calls a Process Version. It is essentially a new set of algorithms and other mathematic equations that I would never understand, that make our images look better. And all throughout high school, I thought math would never be useful to me. It turns out that it is very useful, as long as someone smart employes it in my photo software. Lightroom 3 can employ the older math from 2003 (used in LR 2) or it can employ the new math inherent in LR3. The new math is beautiful and worth updating images that you are taking a second look at, but

Using Publishing Services in Adobe Lightroom 3.2

As a photographer, I like shooting and don’t like trying to mess with Facebook, Twitter, Flicker, Blogs, Portfolios etc. I don’t have the patience for it. Accessing different accounts and uploading photos, etc. I want people to see my work, but I don’t like the wasted time. Enter Lightroom 3.2: now with Publish Services, I can upload photos to various online services without ever leaving Lightroom. Publish services are plug-ins made by the various sites to expedite the process of sharing your photos. Look for more to come in the future. They are super cool. I am looking forward to seeing everyone at Pictage Partner Conference in New Orleans. This year will be even better than last year. In addition to speaking at Partner Conference

Using the Adjustment Brush in Lightroom 3 (Part 2)

I have already done a video about the adjustment brush, but I just finished working on an engagement session, where I used the adjustment brush to do something you would think you need to go into Photoshop to do. So I thought I would pass it along to you. It always amazes me how far we’ve come. I feel like my grandfather who talked about growing up without cars and how he remembered the very first crank ford in town. Well, I remember when instant review was a Polaroid (and not an iPhone Polaroid app). I remember retouching images with a brush and some spot tone and a q-tip with bleach. I remember when Adobe programs didn’t even recognize RAW files. And now, I am

Using the Adjustment Brush in Lightroom 3

Using the Adjustment Brush in Lightroom 3 from Jared Platt on Vimeo. I try to stay out of Photoshop as much as possible. Why? Because Photoshop is like an addictive habit and once I am in there, I will spend way too much time on a photograph. So, my general rule of thumb is to only go into Photoshop when someone is paying me to do so. So, that means that when I have an image that needs just a little bit of help, some of the localized adjustments that I used to do in Photoshop, I must do somewhere else. I can do most of them in Lightroom, without having to open Photoshop, and as a bonus, they are all sync-able from one image

Using Target Collections in Adobe Lightroom 3

Collecting images for various uses is made even easier with the addition of the Target Collection feature in Lightroom 3. This is just a quick tip on how to use this new feature. I use it to collect images for clients and vendors alike as well as for workshops and examples, etc. It is a fantastic feature, small as it may be, it really is a great addition to the Lightroom. Using XMP Sidecar Files to Sync Lightroom with Bridge and Photoshop Camera RAW

Lightroom is my preferred platform for viewing, selecting, editing and delivering images, but occasionally, I need to open images directly into Photoshop, or view a folder of images in Bridge. In either case, the XMP data is the key to making a seamless workflow for that kind of circumstance. This Lightroom lesson explains how to use XMP data to allow a synchronous interaction between Lightroom, Bridge and Photoshop Camera RAW.
