Town Hall Debate: Turnaround Times

Let’s bust a myth. There’s no right way to run your photography business. Many self-proclaimed leaders make a boatload of money selling formulas for running your business. Well, here at The Photo Life, we don’t believe in secret formulas or overnight success stories. We believe the only right way of doing business is the one that serves your unique clients and grows your business the old-fashioned way. Hard work and happy clients are your foundation for success. Different systems work for different studios, so the key is finding one that suits your clients and your business! That’s why we’re eager to bring you the first of many “Town Hall Debates” here on The Photo Life. Town Hall Debates are a fun way of giving you

Making Virtual Copies vs. DNG Copies in Lightroom 3

This Lightroom Podcast is in answer to the questions: How do I make duplicate images in Lightroom and name them with unique names so I can show them to a client and be able to keep them separated? This is basically a question of when you should use a virtual copy vs a DNG copy. So here is the answer. Making Virtual Copies vs. DNG Copies in Lightroom 3 from Jared Platt on Vimeo. How I Forge Collaborative Vendor Relationships

One of the most rewarding paths I’ve taken as a photographer has been forging collaborative relationships with other wedding professionals. By recognizing the contributions of the many creatives involved in assembling a wedding, I can help foster a team environment that makes our wedding day experience more of a collaboration, and helps form meaningful working friendships. After the wedding, my approach to synergistic promotion creates a word-of-mouth buzz that allows my work to speak for itself. It Takes a Village I can’t create beautiful images of gorgeous florals, cakes, tablescapes, and even a bride, without the many talents of floral designers, cake designers, event designers, makeup and hair stylists… The list goes on. The beauty that is a wedding is the result of many, many

Using the Lens Correction Panel in Lightroom 3

Many people only think about the Lens Correction Panel in Lightroom 3 when they are trying to correct either a vignette or warping from an extremely wide angle lens. But most lenses (especially zoom lenses) warp the image to some degree. Using the Lens Corrections is not just for wide angle lenses. This tool helps images from every lens with very little user intervention. Try it out. I think you will love it. Jared’s Lightroom Workflow Workshop is back on tour. Use the Right Click in Lightroom 3 (Video Tutorial)

So many questions can be answered by simply right clicking in Lightroom. If you want to do something to anything in Lightroom, try right clicking it and see what you get. This is just a short list of things that the right click can do and by no means exhaustive. Just right click everything in Lightroom, even the little triangles at the edge of the screen, or the individual section headings on the left and right panels. Spend 20 minutes just right clicking. It will answer so many questions that you will no longer have to ask me about. As much as I like being needed… I’d rather have you exploring and discovering things for yourself. And if you are on a mac, you do

The Difference Between Good and Great Photographers

I have always said that the difference between a good photographer and a great photographer is in what they choose to show to the world.  Cartier-Bresson said that “showing your contact sheet is like taking your pants off in public.”  The photographer who is willing to show everything to the public, puts their weaknesses on display and waters down the potency of their vision.  When photographers flood their portfolio with inferior images for the sake of volume, the images become an albatross hung around the neck of the collection and they drag the work down. On the other hand, when a photographer is a harsh editor and honest with himself when selecting his portfolio, he will reject the simply adequate in favor of the great,

How We Find Success in Dependent Systems

This is part two of The Photo Life Blog Series, True Life: I’m Married to My Business Partner. This series explores how husband and wife photography teams find success when their business and personal lives collide. Dave and I have been working together for five years now. Initially, it was hard and some days it still is, but I don’t think we would have it any other way. Erin Youngren wrote an excellent post last week about how they function best by using what she termed “closed systems” in which each person has their own tasks independent of the other person. We do this to an extent (and after their article we are exploring what additional systems we can “close”), however we have found that having

Does anyone really want to go back?
