The Canon 1DX: Geek-Out Product Review

Rather than beat around the bush with a long, meandering introduction and make you meticulously read all the way to the conclusion, I’ll just come right out and say it. The Canon 1DX is the best camera I’ve ever used. Hands down. By far. Ok, now that that is out of the way, I’ll get down to a few of the specifics — the things I love the most about it and a few of the things I wish Canon would fix/change. While I’ve been very impressed by the 1Dx, I firmly believe there is no such thing as the perfect camera and the 1DX is no exception. Canon 1Dx, 1/640th, f2, ISO 1,000, 50mm   A few words about the nature of this review.

Tips for Instantly Improving Your Next Engagement Session

Engagement sessions are great ways to get to know your clients and to boost their confidence in themselves so that they’ll know their pictures will be beautiful when you show up at their wedding. Here are some simple, practical tips for instantly improving your next engagement session. Have them start in a sitting position. People often talk about not knowing “what to do” while they’re being photographed. If they’re standing, they can start getting nervous and move around a bit. I try to put people in a position where they don’t feel stiff and they don’t have the option to move around too much. Having them sit is a great way to accomplish that! My favorite sitting position is to have the groom sit while the bride

The Day a Natural Light Photographer Busted Out a Flash for a Portrait Session

I’ve always called myself a natural light photographer. If you visit my site and peruse my portfolio, you’ll be hard pressed to find a single portrait on the site where I used a flash. Like many other photographers, I’ll bring out aflash for the reception, but when I shoot portraits – whether at a wedding, engagement session, or family shoot – I prefer to find the light that exists naturally rather than create my own light. I’d even go so far as to say I have never used a flash during a portrait shoot of a couple. Until this past Wednesday. Christi and Ndu hired me a few months ago because they had missed out on having engagement photos done before their wedding, and wanted to hire me to

The Value of Routine

When we think of athletes we typically think in terms of competition, power, speed, and grace. We remember greats like Michael Jordan sinking game winning shots, Tiger Woods nailing perfect drives, or Rodger Federer placing un-hittable serves. What we rarely think of when we think of sports are routines. That’s odd though isn’t it? If we think about it, sports are absolutely filled with routine.  In fact, we don’t have to think about it long before we realize that the very best athletes are those who have gone to great lengths to perfect their routine. Golfers go through the same motions every time before they hit a put. Basketball players dribble the ball the exact same amount of times every time they step up to

Why I Travel for Engagement Shoots

People ask me all the time why I frequently travel for engagement shoots.  Many photographers balk at driving more than 30 minutes to photograph an engagement session, since the actual shoot time for these sessions is usually a few hours at most.  So why is it that I’m more than eager to hop on a plane and travel across the continent just for a shoot that will last a few hours? Here’s just a few of the reasons why I love traveling for these engagement shoots: 1. It’s crucial to photograph people in places that are meaningful to them. When I’m traveling for an engagement shoot, I often travel to the place where the couple first met or where they currently live. About half the
